ArtsMove is open to artists in a wide variety of creative enterprises: performing arts, 2D and 3D visual arts, literary arts, culinary arts, and more. ArtsMoveā€š full and part-time practicing artists make a commitment to live within 3.5 miles of downtown for at least one year and enthusiastically contribute to the city’s cultural tapestry and economic vitality. We offer $2,500 to cover moving expenses, and an opportunity to join a creative community flourishing in the Scenic City. To apply for this program, visit the application form.

Calendar

Applications are accepted on a bi-monthly basis. The next application deadline will be January 1, 2011. Once all application materials are submitted, a panel of experts in the fields of arts and culture will critically review all applications and work samples. Eligible applicants will be notified within 30 days of each deadline.

Eligibility

Eligible artists make a commitment to live in a Chattanooga neighborhood within 3.5 miles of downtown, actively participating in neighborhood life, and working in a designated creative field for a minimum of one year. Applicants must be 18 years of age, and full-time students enrolled in a secondary educational institution are not eligible.

Application Requirements

To apply for ArtsMove, submit the following materials in the application form:

  1. Artist Statement.
    In the space provided, please include the following information in one paragraph, not exceeding 250 words.
    • Personal statement regarding professional art/artisan/design form;
    • Commitment to exhibiting, performing or working in this discipline;
    • Anticipated market area;
    • Statement regarding potential ideas for community involvement.
  2. Resumé.
    Document should include contact information, education, honors and grant awards, publications, professional affiliations, related work or professional expe
    rience, and recent commissions, exhibitions and performances, where applicable.
  3. Work Samples.
    The application must include five (5) work samples. Submit these as digital media online. Label each file with the artist’s last name and the work’s title, date and medium. Please submit these in a .doc, .pdf , or .jpeg file format.
    • For Performing Arts: Video file or written score where applicable.
    • For 2D and 3D Visual Arts: Files of images preferred, up to 5 accepted.
    • For Literary Arts: up to 5 pages of manuscript.
    • For Culinary Arts: Video file demonstrating work, digital portfolio, menus or other supporting materials.
    As this is a highly competitive program, the submission of supplemental materials is encouraged. This can include copies of reviews, programs and news articles. Applicants may submit up to two supplemental materials.
  4. Letters of recommendation.
    Applicants must have two (2) letters of recommendation submitted from persons in the applicant’s field of work, who know the applicant’s work well. Applicants are responsible for notifying these people to email their letters of recommendation to letters@artsmove.org. Letters should include the recommender's name, contact phone number, and should give a brief description of their own qualifications in the art form. Letters should be between 250 and 500 words and should include how the recommender knows the applicant and why they feel the applicant would be an asset to the Chattanooga creative community.
  5. Proof of Residence.
    Applicants must provide a proof of residence, for example, a utility bill, that verifies their current address. This residence must be outside a 50-mile radius of downtown Chattanooga. Proof should include a date and address and may be faxed to (423) 648-2194. The fax should include a cover page indicating that it is for ArtsMove. Proof may also be scanned and emailed to letters@artsmove.org.

Once You’ve Applied

After initial approval, start looking for a property to purchase or rent within the 3.5 miles footprint. Artists should establish a relationship with a realtor and mortgage lender/bank early in the process to establish loan eligibility and approval.

The incentive will be reserved for the artist once Choose Chattanooga has the received the following:

  • Confirmed eligibility.
  • Copy of Purchase Agreement/Rental Contract signed by the artist as Buyer(s) and Seller(s) or Primary Renter of qualifying property.

Reimbursement up to $2500 will be granted once Choose Chattanooga receives all receipts and expenses are approved. Artists may use a licensed real estate agent of their choice. For the sake of convenience, we have provided a list of real estate agents and other relocation contacts that are experienced and familiar with the ArtsMove incentive program.

  7. Expenses Exemption

    Please fill out this form if there are items you deem necessary to relocate to Chattanooga for either personal or professional reasons. An ArtsMove panel at Choose Chattanooga will review these requests carefully to determine whether or not incentive money may be used to purchase these items. If approved, money used to make these purchases may not exceed the $2500 ArtsMove incentive.
